Recently found out about this site as well, dope shit! & this is a really good list, so I'll definitely check those joints out. I listened & sat through GKMC and didn't feel anything for it either, just felt it had a lot of hype & hoopla over it. Heck, I was attacked by the bandwagoners of today for having my own way of thinking. But I'm glad you put Grief Pedigree up. Went through a lot of ups and downs this year & that album really helped me through.

You got a new supporter here, salute.

But I have to say I didn't really dig deep for most of my favorite releases this year. (I was more focused on the older releases I've missed)
Because of that I still need to check out some of your posted albums.

Just found out about you and this site.
Great great list!
A lot of my personal favorite albums are missing but that's ok - you already mentioned them (atleast I think you did :D)
Skelethon is my #1 and ANX my #5
Melanin 9's new album is great, too.
Myka 9, Variex., Thavius Beck also released great projects.

I must say it's very difficult for me to pick a favourite but I would have to go with 'City On The Edge Of Never' or 'A Rhythm Runs Through It' or 'They Live... We Sleep' or 'The Spray Can Diaries' or... Yeah, it's very difficult.

There is so much to appreciate about your mixes. You have such a good ear for music. Also, I really like that you don't show off with beat juggling/scratching or playing 30 seconds of a song that i'm just getting into and then moving on to something else. So many DJ's do that and it ruins the vibe for me. So thanks for sharing with us and please don't stop. I always get a buzz when I come to your site and there's a new mix for me to download. It will be a sad day when you quit!!

Thanks familio.

That Steve Reich looks well cool, I never heard of that, gotta check it out.

Should be some stuff you'll like over the next year, Jester.

Salutes to you brother! thanks for holding us. I am glad to see your finally finding your niche'... You have advanced the idea of what a mixtape could be online (streamed and remixed). Thank you for allowing us to be apart of your hip-hop experience. It was and is a blessing. NuFF respects to you!

UHM, the offer still stands at FRINGE RECORDINGS! ;/

Keep up the good work.

I found the falling is the best piece as well. It's just like Steve Reich's Three Tales but somewhat better.

I also like the cybernetic pieces or bebop ones. Well anything you do that doesn't feel too much rap.

I wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know these graf mixes are dope. Ever since I was a little snot nosed kid I've been doing graffiti and even managed to turn it into what I do for a living. ( well airbrushing really, but very close ) I didn't realize there were so many graf related tunes. You must have done some diggin.
Anyways, great work as usual, thanks.
cheers.

If it is a carefully concocted hoax, it's too brilliant for me to care.

And if you can't encourage spam from Siberian rappers, whose spam can you encourage?

He's gotten like 4,000 views today. I'm determined to make this go near-viral...like bacterial?...and bring that up to 100,000. The more I watch it, the more I like it. I think it's the two-sizes-too-small overcoat.

just got the sam mssg on the soundcloud, the vid is quite entertaining. Posted it on my fb but then took it down a little later for fear it might be a joke/prank video by an american or british rapper trying to make up a new persona. Plus i had been spammed by him and i really shouldn't encourage that.

Hey this is a cool mix!
I came across this page looking for the Brooklyn Zoo acapella for a live project I'm doing. Any chance I can get it off you?
It's so hard to find!

Cheers.

Edan isn't as well known as maybe he should be, but he's somewhat known...I mean, hip cats know him. Real M.O.A.T.s no one really ever heard of.

Other M.O.A.T.s when I get around to them will be...

LPs/One Not-A-Hit Wonders:
Basehead - Play With Toys
The Goats - Tricks of the Shade
Fatal Hussein - In The Line of Fire

Overall M.O.A.T.s:
DDay One
L*Roneous
Schoolly D, maybe

Taking suggestions though.

Ask your local hep cat what 'monkey on my back means.'

Then imagine the monkey is King Kong.

Then imagine King Kong is neon-colored.

Then get out your Grey's Anatomy and look up sacroiliac.

Busdriver has an annoying voice and to me just tries to hard to be clever and funny, and isn't. Not feeling that dude.

K-The-I??? has an innate sincerity I believe. He's compelled to rap that way. It sounds like he maybe thinks he's rapping normally but doesn't know it, because somebody hit him in the head with a brick. He's on some Oliver Sacks shit. (The Man Who Mistook His Wife For Being Hit In The Head With A Brick.) He's ripping some super word salads up in this bitch. Also, I like his voice, his beat choices and his flow.

Peace...

Dropping by to thank you for this unexpected, but VERY appreciated review (which I ran across by a completely random google search , gotta love the new instant search feature)...

This is why I continue to make music & push the envelope with it, because I know that @ the end of the day, there's someone "out there" that NEEDS something other than cookie cutter music to get through the day...your readers obviously share your ears, so readers I want also to thank you all, whether you've heard my music or not...You've taken time out to give someone the listen that they work for...

Again, thanks for the Awesome Review, & I'll keep in tune with this site, DEFINITELY worth my attention...

Peace...Au
p.s. this review led me to using Bandcamp as my newest interface, just what I needed, so even MORE thanks for that...

The first maybe dozen would be easy, but then I'd be putting up songs that are not necessarily great but just fit the list, and what's the point in that?

The last 20 or so I guarantee would end up being bedroom Youtube rips of 'Reppin' Fargo' by the Middlebury Middle School Gangsta Killaz (cf Bunk Beds Mother Fucker). Be easier to find enough great tracks for every former Soviet Republic, given how many great beatmakers there are out there, like Phox for example.

Overall it fits too well with my obsessive compulsive nature of wasting huge amounts of time.

What I like best about this idea is somebody else doing it. Maybe Complex, it fits their 20-clicks-per-article business model.

I like the 50/50 idea. California might be easy but Too Short's California Girls would make my shortlist. Super Chron Florida Ki's. By The Time I Get to Arizona. Tennessee...after that?

Ok, yeah. It'd be limited.

Bro,

I totally agree – I got into Graveiggaz as a teenager. In part due to their ‘hardcore’ lyrical content and affiliation with the Wu. It wasn’t until later, once my ears had matured, that I realised how amazing the production is and how cohesive the concepts/themes are on 6 Feet Deep (actually released in New Zealand as Niggamortis). Another level... Everytime I peep the album I uncover something new. So many weird sample choices, adlibs and overdubs...

I’m also a big fan of 3 Feet High & Rising and the first the first Handsome Boy Modelling School... Yep, I got my turntables from a paper route and lawns!

Safe,

Ah, my PSY/OPtical friend, you are correct that the dis itself is strictly hip hop. But it occurs within a self-delineated non-hip hop context:
1. It's a Twitter beef.
2. It's a Twitter beef with Aimee Mann
3. It's a Twitter beef with Aimee Mann about his acting
4. It's a Twitter beef with Aimee Mann about his acting on Law & Order: Rapey Rapey Child Molesty Unit

Ergo, these outweigh the true hip hopness of the aforementioned hot bowl of dicks.

I agree with everything as an example except "eat a hot bowl of dicks"
Now Ice T is a joke but that was pretty funny. I would dig that more than anything that is being called new music these days.
High Rollers indeed!

Very well researched and insightful my man. I have had conversations with Ram and his intellect was phenomenal. As I said on Unkut, it is tragic that cultural innovators are being lost in all genres of expression with little to no mention; you get major respect for documenting a true original. Respect due.

I have to totally disagree with you Grandman is a trainwreck! He has no sense flow, he's typical slammer. He has very little mixing ability. He just slams tracks. I can't wrap my head around somebody who supposedly has "25 years in business" could be so weak at deejaying.

Maybe it was deadline thing. The mix sounded as it recorded in one take, lots of mistakes. Whatever the reason it's pretty gruesome.

Very tight set, with some less obvious, but still boomin' tracks. I still think overall I'm going to stick with the year 1988 as better, just because the shit was still getting invented back then.

Snoop also did a cover of The Doors. I guess he has an eclectic taste, or willing to ruin any song for a listen.

*Dre believed himself to be creating a compromise between the empiricists(West Coast) and the rationalists(East Coast). The empiricists believed that knowledge is acquired through experience alone, but the rationalists maintained that such knowledge is open to Cartesian doubt (and fat beats) and that reason alone provides us with knowledge. Dre argues, however, that using reason without applying it to experience will only lead to illusions, while experience will be purely subjective without first being subsumed under pure reason (and blunts).

...he's the whore master?

Maybe it's some kinda slang. Like if I said something was 'dope' on a Brazilian site and they were all, 'it's addictively narcotic?'

Because Doom is many things, but he is not much of a whore master.

Oh, wait. 'Pimp.' It means pimp. I get it.

I stumbled on this Dub-Hip mix last nite when i was (conveniently) blazed. It starts out more HipHop with some really good tracks and then progresses more towards the Dub aspect of things.

**The first 20 minutes are straight hiphop. Then it switches to dub'ish remixes/reworks/etc.**

I didnt make it. Im just sharing. Sharing is my hoby, incase you havent noticed.

Enjoi
(that shouldve been my rave name btw)

EDIT! Now that im listening it sober for the first time it's not as good as i thought. LOL"

Word, I do likes me some Spooky--Dead Dreamer, Optometry are both good. He definitely is doing his own thing and I'm with it a lot of the time...it's just what I said, sometimes the ideas/reading list gets in the way of the music.

I'll make fun of someone I like. If I hated him, I wouldn't bother.

Edan always makes me hungry for cheese for some reason. Oh wait, that's Edam.

Ha! Good stuff! Very highlarious. I would totally buy the Wu phone.

As for Spooky, I dig some of his music ('Diary of a Dead Dreamer' is a great album, and that 'Object Unknown' track with Kool Keith rules.

He does get a little pretentious sometimes, but so do I.
I am a big fan of books (I am a Librarian).

His latest book ('Sound Unbound' http://www.amazon.com/Sound-Unbound-Sampling-Digital-Culture/dp/0262633639, is a good read- he is only editor, so it's a lot of pretentious (yet interesting) writings). It comes with a good CD too (I can upload it if you want).

It's been awhile since I have been to your spot.
Good stuff going on! Keep it up.

PS- If you have not heard the new Edan mix, YOU MUST!
It is so bad ass, check it out--> http://beatsandblood.blogspot.com/2010/01/echo-party.html
It is sooooo dope!
Seriously, don't sleep on this, it is a masterpiece, it is much more than a simple mix.
Let me know what you think...

For real!!! The album is terrible. So disppointing. And did you noticed how nearly all songs followed the same formula...loop a sample of someone singing on the hook? That joint "You & I" sounded like a tune any 13 year old "producer" could have done. Rakim definitely blew it on his return to greatness.
